Abstract:   (26 Views)
Background: Having a parent diagnosed with cancer imposes additional emotional stress on adolescents. One effective method for improving this situation is emotional management training. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of emotion regulation training on social isolation and self-criticism in adolescents with parents suffering from cancer.
Methods:  This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test, post-test, and one-month follow-up design with a control group. The study population included all adolescents aged 13 to 18 with parents diagnosed with cancer who were under the coverage of the Qamar-Bani-Hashem Charity Institute in Najafabad, Isfahan Province, in spring 2024. A total of 30 adolescents who met the research criteria were selected through convenient sampling and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups, 15 people for each group. The research instruments included Russell and colleagues’ social isolation questionnaire and Thompson and Zuroff’s levels of self-criticism scale. The emotion regulation training protocol was delivered in 8 sessions of 90 minutes each for the experimental group. Data was analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and SPSS version 27.
Results: It was found that emotion regulation training reduced social isolation and self-criticism in adolescents with parents diagnosed with cancer (P < 0.05), with a significant difference observed across all three stages. The effect remained stable during the follow-up stage.
Conclusion: Considering the findings, emotion regulation training can be used to support adolescents with a parent suffering from cancer, aiming to improve their emotional and mental condition
