Background: Breast cancer is a chronic disease that not only affects physical problems, but also can affect the emotional and psychological processes of patients, so psychological interventions are welcomed in this regard. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of compassion-focused therapy on the resilience, sleep disorders, and body image in women with breast cancer.
Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design, with an unequal control group. The study population included all married women with breast cancer who had been referred to the medical professionals in Ardabil city in the second half of the year 2024. A total of 39 people were selected by the convenience sampling method, and they were assigned to experimental (n=19) and control (n=20) groups by the simple random sampling method. Data collection in the pre-test and post-test stages was performed using the 19-item Body Image Inventory (Littleton & et al, 2005), the 10-item Mini Sleep Questionnaire (Zomer & et al, 1985), and the 25-item Connor & Davidson Resilience Scale (Connor & Davidson, 2003). The compassion-focused therapy inventory was performed for the experimental group in 8 sessions, each lasting 75 minutes, once and a week. Data was analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance using SPSS-22.
Results: The findings indicated that there was a significant difference among the resilience (p<0.01, F=72.62), sleep disorders (p<0.01, F=130.13) and body image (p<0.01, F=416.03); this means that the compassion-focused therapy had a significant positive effect on the resilience, sleep disorders and body image in women with breast cancer.
Conclusion: Considering the effectiveness of the compassion-focused therapy on the increase of resilience and improvement of sleep disorders and body image in women with breast cancer, the counselors and psychologists of psychotherapy centers and hospitals can benefit from this therapeutic method to increase resilience and improvement of sleep disorders and body image in woman with breast cancer.
