Background: Caring for patients undergoing hemodialysis is associated with physical and psychological stress, which may negatively impact the health of caregivers. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between caregiving burden and general health among informal caregivers of patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 110 informal caregivers selected through convenience sampling from hospitals affiliated with Kerman University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected using a demographic sheet, the Goldberg General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28), and the Novak and Guest Caregiver Burden Inventory. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and inferential tests, including the Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman’s correlation coefficient, using SPSS-25.
Results: The results showed that the majority of caregivers (74.6%) reported moderate to severe caregiving burden, and 66.4% had low general health status. A significant correlation was observed between caregiver burden and general health among informal caregivers of patients undergoing hemodialysis (R=0.53, p<0.001).
Conclusion: Caring for patients undergoing hemodialysis results in a moderate-to-severe caregiving burden and adversely affects the general health of the caregivers. It is essential to consider the health status of these caregivers in health policies
