Background: sleep is one of the most important physical needs. Hospitalized patients often complain of sleep disturbance their sleep not being refreshing or restorative. Many factors effect on sleep health in hospitalized patients. Being aware of these factors can be very effective on planning and providing nursing care. Aim: The purpose of this study was to study the effective factors on sleep health in hospitalized patients in wards.

Material & Method: This was a descriptive study done in 2009 in Rafsanjan. Through Quota sampling method, 370 patients in CCU, medical and surgical wards were selected. A questionnaire with 58 questions was used to collect data by interview. The data was analyzed using spss 16.

Result: The results showed that sleeping in hospital beds in 293 people- %79.2, and the changes in bed (pillow, mattress, coverlet, …) were the greatest environment factors, pain was the greatest physical factor, 182 people- % 57.3 felt worried about not being able to perform the everyday roles (parental, marital, …), 269 people-  % 70, was the greatest mental factor, talking with others , 64 people -  % 27.3, the greatest before sleep habit and awakening the patients for nursing care , 57 people-  % 15.4, was reported as the greatest care factor.

Conclusion:  Patients hospitalized in the hospital do not have a good quality sleep. Nurses in difference wards with the knowledge about effective factors on sleep health in hospitalized patients will be able to help improve the physical and mental health of the patients.
