Abstract:   (290 Views)
Background: Anorexia nervosa is one of the most treatment-resistant mental disorders that seriously affects the mental health of the affected person. The present study was conducted with the aim of comparing the effectiveness of commitment and acceptance therapy and family-based treatment on improving the body image of female students with anorexia nervosa.
Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design and a three-month follow-up with a control group. The statistical population was female students with anorexia nervosa in Karaj in the academic year 1402, of which 45 of them were randomly assigned to two intervention groups and a control group (15 people each) by purposive non-random sampling. The first and second intervention groups received commitment and acceptance-based therapies and family-based therapies, respectively, during 10 90-minute sessions, and the control group did not receive any therapy at this stage. All three groups answered the Garner and Gerfingel Eating Attitude Questionnaires (1982) to identify students with anorexia nervosa and the Cash and Prusinski Body Image Questionnaire (1990) before, after, and three months after completing the therapeutic interventions. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance using SPSS-24 software.
Results: The results showed that family-based treatment and commitment and acceptance-based treatment were able to significantly increase body image scores in the post-test of the experimental groups (p≥0.01) and there was no significant difference between these two treatments (p≤0.01). The results of the three-month follow-up test indicate the durability of the therapeutic effects of both treatments.
Conclusion: According to the results obtained, commitment and acceptance-based treatments and family-based treatment led to an improvement in positive body image in girls with anorexia nervosa disorder. Therefore, mental health professionals are advised to use these two treatments to improve the mental health of girls with anorexia nervosa
