Background: A healthy lifestyle is crucial for enhancing the quality of life and preventing chronic diseases in older age. Understanding the lifestyle status and its associated factors among older adults is essential for developing health promotion programs. This study aimed to investigate the lifestyle status of older adults in eastern Guilan, Iran, and its association with demographic characteristics.
Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was part of a larger research project conducted in 2024 on 150 older adults residing in the eastern Guilan Province in Iran (including the cities of Astaneh-Ashrafieh, Lahijan, Langarud, and Rudsar). Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants among older adults attending specialized clinics and public spaces (parks, recreational, and cultural centers). Data were collected using a demographic sheet and the Iranian Elderly Healthy Lifestyle Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests using SPSS version 20, considering a significance level of p<0.05.
Results: The results showed that 63.3% of the older adults had a desirable lifestyle. Among lifestyle dimensions, the preventive dimension had the highest mean score (63.86±8.35), while the physical activity, exercise, and recreation dimension had the lowest (14.02±4.67). Analysis of the relationship between lifestyle and demographic variables indicated significant associations between lifestyle score and education level (p = 0.003), income (p = 0.010), and housing status (p = 0.026).
Conclusion: The findings indicated a relatively favorable lifestyle among older adults in eastern Guilan; however, the weakness in physical activity requires consideration and health-promoting interventions in this area. Moreover, the results of this study showed that the lifestyle of older adults is influenced not only by individual conditions but also by socioeconomic factors. Therefore, improving the quality of life in older ages requires health-oriented policymaking that considers demographic differences when designing health promotion programs.
