Abstract:   (59 Views)
Background: Nursing competency is one of the key factors in improving the quality of clinical care and patient health. Besides, academic advising can play an effective role in enhancing students’ academic performance and professional competency. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the relationship between academic advising and nursing competency among nursing students at the Ardabil School of Nursing and Midwifery in 2024.
Methods: This correlational descriptive study was conducted on 350 nursing students using stratified random sampling. The data collection tools included a three-part questionnaire: demographic characteristics, academic advising and counseling evaluation tool among undergraduate nursing students (Selim et al, 2023), and nursing competence (Huang et el, 2022). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 27 and statistical tests, including independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and linear regression.
Results: The results showed that 81.6% and 68.9% of the students rated their status of academic advising and nursing competency, respectively, as moderate. A positive and significant correlation was observed between academic advising and nursing competency (r=0.41, p<0.001). Additionally, academic advising was identified as the strongest predictor of nursing competency, explaining 16% of its variance.
Conclusion: The study findings indicated that there was a positive and significant relationship between academic counseling and nursing competency of nursing students. Therefore, receiving favorable academic counseling can help improve students' professional competencies and clinical skills. Accordingly, strengthening counseling structures, increasing the quality and availability of counseling services, and providing purposeful educational programs can lead to improved professional performance and clinical readiness of nursing students.
